Bob, Beth and Devon were guests of Rick Foster, the Western Harnett Lions Club and the Lee County Wildlife Club at a special event arranged for eleven area blind and visually impaired men and women. We met on the grounds of the Lee County Gun Club for a few hours of target practice. Rick, who is the President of the Western Harnett Lions Club, arranged this outing as a way for this group to experience something a little out of the ordinary. The instruction was superb, the weather cooperated, and everyone returned safe and sound! It was a good day all around and we wish to thank everyone involved for making it such an enjoyable experience.

The UNI-SELECT/MIRA Benefit Golf Tournament will be held Thursday, May 24, 2012 at Hanging Rock Golf Club in Salem, Virginia. The tournament is a fundraiser for the MIRA Foundation USA, who provides guide dogs to a largely overlooked population of young people with vision impairment, not only helping these children with mobility issues, but bridging the social gap that blindness causes. The goal is to help raise $10,000 for MIRA by selling hole sponsorships along with a silent auction following the tournament. Please help us reach that goal by participating and supporting our tournament. You can view the items up for auction by following this post, items will be added on a regular basis. We held our second annual Dining in the Dark fundraising dinner last Friday evening at the elegant North Ridge Country Club. The wonderful people of Raleigh rallied once again and honored our work with donations that far exceeded our dreams. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to everyone who attended and made the evening so special on so many fronts. We feel truly blessed.
Bob and Devon attended two of Mrs. Joan Hilsman’s classes at Pinecrest today. A.J. Johnson, one of the MIRA students in line to receive a dog this year, was in the first class that Bob addressed. Students listened attentively while Bob gave them a bit of MIRA’s history and talked about the many ways a guide dog can assist someone who is blind. A.J. told the class he was very excited about getting his dog because he knew it was “really going to change my life.”
In between the class sessions, Bob caught up with the Sherwood twins, Evan and Landon, who were the organizers at Pinecrest for the hugely successfull High School FunRun MIRA benefit held on April 10th. It was a great day all around, as the twins gave Bob an additional $500.00 they had collected in contributions, while Bob presented them with the Colby Virtue scholarship in honor of all of their work, together with the Devon Cup trophy honoring the school that raised the most money for MIRA. This trophy will stay at Pinecrest for a year until next year’s event.
On Saturday, Apr28th over 150 friends of MIRA gathered at the Pinehurst Members Club for the area’s third annual Dining in the Dark dinner. This event was highlighted by the presence of all six of the students from the MIRA Class of 2011 with their MIRA guide dogs! Then on Saturday, May 19, two of our students, Aikenite Ryan Uhle and his friend from Raleigh,Darcie Crane, attended the first Aiken DID with just over 100 guests. Both dinners were made very special by the presence of so many students and dogs.
Bob and Devon, accompanied by Elaine and Beth, were honored guests at Prom Night at Union Pines High School on Saturday, May 7th. Bob was presented with a check for $1,000 by the senior class, who designated MIRA as the recipient of their annual gift to a non-profit. Bob, in turn, gave a check to Emily Christaldi, who received the Colby Virtue Service Award for her superb organization of the High School Fun Run on April 10th at Landmark Farm in Southern Pines.
