mira helping blind children guide dogs

mira goes green

MIRA Foundation USA has developed a recycling program to help generate the funds needed to provide guide dogs at no charge to blind children. You can participate in this effort by donating your used cell phones and ink cartridges. Your donation also keeps these items out of the landfills and helps save the planet from further pollution by toxic chemicals and waste.

INK CARTRIDGE RECYCLING: This is a new program that is evolving at  MIRA. We are currently signing on accounts for those wishing to recycle original cartridges, toner or laser, to benefit the MIRA Foundation. Pick ups will be scheduled at your convenience. Tax receipts are available upon request or can be downloaded from this site.  If you have any questions or would like to volunteer your support, please contact Christina Swiat at 910.603.7862 or by email at: recycle@mirausa.org

CELL PHONE RECYCLING: The facts are sobering: one cell phone dropped in a landfill can poison 35,000 gallons of water. That’s enough water to supply 153 people for a full year! Furthermore, it is estimated that up to 80 % of all cell phones ever produced have yet to be recycled.

We collect:

  • Cell phones
  • Cell phone accessories
  • iPods and MP3 players
  • Handheld game systems
  • GPS handheld units
  • Laptops
  • E-readers
  • Portable hard drives

Recycling cell phones helps the environment by saving energy and keeping costly useable materials out of landfills and incinerators. If not disposed of properly, cell phones are damaging to our air, soil and water.

Here’s The Rub
The rapid development of new cell phone technology means that all cell phones become outdated very quickly. Add to this their small size and there is little to prevent them from ending up in landfills, contributing to the planet’s ever growing pollution of toxic chemicals. According to Eco-Cell, there are over 260 million cell phone users (85% of the population) in the U.S. alone and nearly 1 billion currently in retirement. Sadly, only 10% of unwanted cell phones are recycled each year.

Did You Know?

  • Each cell phone contains at least eight toxic elements.
  • One cell phone can contaminate 35,000 gallons of water, if it gets into the landfill – that’s enough water for 153 people for one year.
  • In the U.S. we have already retired over 500 million cell phones.
  • Each month, an additional 10 million cell phones are retired.
  • In the U.S., we currently recycle about 33% of our waste.

PBTs
Hazardous substances known as Persistent, Bioaccumulative and Toxic Chemicals (PBTs) are contained in cell phones as well as their accessories. Metals (e.g. antimony, arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, copper and lead) are included in the list of PBTs. These build up in the environment and can linger for a long time, causing adverse effects on human health.

MIRA GOES GREEN is an environmentally responsible way to recycle your used phones and accessories and help a special cause at the same time.
